An Interview from One of the World’s Most Remote Islands
During my stay on the breathtaking Cocos (Keeling) Islands, I was invited for an interview about my solo circumnavigation, life at sea, and what it’s like to sail alone across the world’s oceans.
We talked about the challenges of long ocean passages, preparing a 27-foot sailboat for thousands of nautical miles, and the freedom that comes with choosing a different way of life. It was a wonderful opportunity to share my story from one of the most remote and beautiful places in the Indian Ocean.

I was invited to join Paul Trammell’s podcast, Offshore Sailing and Cruising, where we talked about my solo circumnavigation and life aboard my 27-foot sailboat. We discussed sailing in New Zealand, clearing into different countries, travel expenses, sailing solo while family visits, my Grinde 27, the inner forestay, why I chose to sail around the world alone, my favorite destinations, the lessons solo sailing has taught me, bird visitors at sea, fishing (or not), sharks, fear, heavy weather in the Caribbean, creative anchoring, anchors and chain, unforgettable landfalls, magical moments, and the unique freedom of living on a sailboat.

It’s hard not to be impressed and inspired by Jacqueline Evers, the 54-year-old Dutch relationship therapist who set out from the Netherlands in July 2023 to solo circumnavigate on Loveworkx, her 1977 Grinde 27 double-ender, and has already reached the Marquesas. The boat is the same model that Holly Martin of Wind Hippie Sailing is also in the process of solo circumnavigating, but although Jacqueline cites Holly as an inspiration, her choice of boat isn’t a case of slavish imitation—Jacqueline co-owned a Grinde for a while from the age of 18, and had many happy adventures on the IJsselmeer and beyond.
In 2020, during the pandemic, her lifelong sailing dreams came to the fore when she moored up to hull 365 while skippering a larger charter boat and suddenly knew her next big adventure would be aboard a Grinde.
It was very pragmatic to choose a smaller, well prepared boat that’s easy to sail solo as well as easier and cheaper to maintain and repair. This means there are more funds left in the kitty for repairs along the way as we see when, on her first long passage to Horta in the Azores, she ends up diverting to France for repairs. The fact she manages to get quality work done quickly can only mean that it wasn’t cheap, but Jacqueline doesn’t seem to break a sweat.
She and her boat are so well prepared that things seem to go to plan most of the time, and when they don’t, well, she’s prepared for that too. Either way, she’s happy aboard her boat and grateful for the opportunity to sail it around the world.
I like her humility. Jacqueline never misses a chance to credit those who’ve helped and supported her, including the Ocean Cruising Club, which she joined as an associate member before departure, and took great pleasure in being promoted to full membership after completing her first 1,000-mile passage.
Her husband and son don’t share her passion for the sea, but have been her biggest supporters. While it’s perhaps not common for women to sail over the horizon without their families, it’s certainly not as rare as many believe.

Als je je ego op de deurmat achterlaat, gaat je hart steeds verder open. Je karakter is datgene wat je doet als er niemand kijkt. Je ego is je persoonlijkheid, dus datgene wat je doet als mensen naar je kijken. En het losmaken van je ego geeft zo’n vrij gevoel. Dat gelukkige gevoel dat je als kind ook zo erg kunt hebben.

Zeezeiler en avonturier Henk de Velde zeilde zes keer de wereld rond. Over zijn avonturen schreef hij talloze boeken en hij vertelde er regelmatig over op televisie. Hij was het liefst onderweg. Zo voelde hij zich vrij en gelukkig, weg van het gekooide leven dat de meesten van ons leiden. De redactie van Zeilwereld stelde mij een aantal leuke vragen en maakten daar een artikel over.
Leuke vragen werden mij gesteld, zoals:
- Hoe oud was jij toen je voor het eerste besefte dat zeilen echt jouw passie zou gaan worden en waarom?
- Wat voor boot heb je en is dit jouw droomschip?
- Welke aanpassing zou je graag nog doen aan jouw boot?
- Wat is de naam van de boot, en heeft deze nog een speciale betekenis?
- Hoeveel dagen per jaar ben jij aan boord?
- Wat is je allermooiste ankerplek of haven waar je bent geweest en waarom is deze plek je zo bijgebleven?
- Wat zijn jouw plannen voor een droomreis?
- Wat vind jij nu echt een handige accessoire in het zeilen die je veel gebruikt?
- Heb je nog een gouden tip aan de lezers van Zeilwereld?
Waarom zou je solo gaan? 4x in het blad de Drietand van de Kustzeilers – 2021
Voor het blad van de Kustzeilers worden verschillende solozeilers geinterviewd en dit wordt in vier verschillende artikelen verwerkt. Het interview met mij lees je hier.
Dit waren de vragen:
- Wat is het bijzondere/leuke aan solozeilen? Waarom zeil je solo? Wat hebben solotochten voor je betekend?
- Welke boeken/informatie moet een solozeiler tenminste hebben gelezen? Welke websites/platforms op internet zijn de moeite waard voor solozeilers?
- Wat voor tochten – met welk schip – heb je solo gemaakt? Welke tochten – met welk schip – ben je van plan te maken?
- Wat vind je een geschikte boot en/of wanneer vind je een boot geschikt voor solozeilen?
- Wat zijn de gevaren, moeilijke of lastige momenten? En hoe minimaliseer je deze? Heb je gevaarlijke situaties meegemaakt en welke lessen heb je daaruit getrokken?
- Wat doe je op het gebied van veiligheid meer of anders of heb je extra aangeschaft ten opzichte van de situatie dat je met een ervaren bemanning vaart?
- Welke invloeden ervaar je als solozeiler op het fysiek en psychisch functioneren? Hoe ga je daarmee om?
- Hoe doe je dat met slapen/vermoeidheid?
- Heb je nog praktische tips over speciale voorzieningen, bijvoorbeeld voor zeilvoering, eten, sluizen, aanleggen in havens, etc.?
