Playing the ukelele: singing a song about sailing around the world

The Ukulele: A Melodic Companion on the High Seas

In the gentle sway of the ocean, with the horizon stretching endlessly, I found a new companion that added a melodic charm to my sailing adventures: the ukulele. This small, versatile instrument has a fascinating history and has become a cherished part of my journeys across the seas, especially through the enchanting islands of French Polynesia.

C’est mon bateau, mon voyage solitaire

A Brief History of the Ukulele

The ukulele’s story begins in the late 19th century when Portuguese immigrants brought the machete, a small guitar-like instrument, to Hawaii. The Hawaiians embraced and adapted the instrument, creating the ukulele we know today. Its name, often translated as “jumping flea,” reflects the lively, cheerful sound that quickly became synonymous with Hawaiian music and culture.

Discovering the Ukulele on My Voyage

My journey with the ukulele began on a 31-day voyage from Panama to the Marquesas. Although I could play some basic chords on the guitar, I found the instrument too large and cumbersome to bring aboard our sailboat. Seeking a more practical alternative, I discovered the Outdoor Ukulele, known for its durability and weather-resistant design—perfect for the maritime environment.

After ordering one in Miami and having it shipped to Panama, I began teaching myself to play. The compact size and lightweight nature of the ukulele made it an ideal companion for long days at sea. Its bright, soothing tones soon became a beloved part of my daily life on the water.

The Outdoor Ukulele: Perfect for Sailing

The Outdoor Ukulele is a remarkable instrument, crafted to withstand the elements. Made from a high-strength polymer, it is impervious to changes in humidity and temperature, which are constant challenges when sailing. Its resilience means I can leave it on deck or in the cockpit without worrying about damage, allowing me to play whenever inspiration strikes.

Serenading the Islands of French Polynesia

Sailing through the islands of French Polynesia, the ukulele’s music feels perfectly at home. The warm, tropical breezes and the sound of the waves create a natural accompaniment to its lilting melodies. Whether I’m anchored in a tranquil lagoon or moored near a bustling village, the ukulele brings a sense of connection to the local culture and the stunning surroundings.

Playing songs like “What a Wonderful World” and “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” while drifting in these idyllic waters is a simple yet profound joy. These moments of music and reflection remind me of the beauty and serenity of our world, even as we navigate its vast and sometimes unpredictable seas.

Recently, I’ve been singing and playing “C’est mon bateau,” a beautiful French song by Jo Lemaire. This poignant melody captures the essence of a solo sailing journey, telling the story of a woman’s voyage around the world. Through its heartfelt lyrics and gentle rhythm, the song reflects the challenges and triumphs of navigating the seas alone, resonating deeply with my own experiences on the water.

A Musical Journey

The ukulele has become more than just an instrument; it’s a symbol of the harmony and adventure that define my sailing life. Its cheerful notes uplift our spirits and bring a sense of warmth and community, whether alone at sea or sharing a song with fellow sailors and islanders.

As I continue to explore new horizons and discover hidden gems across the globe, the ukulele remains a steadfast companion, its music a reminder of the joy and beauty that can be found in every journey. To those who dream of sailing or simply wish to bring a piece of the islands into their lives, I highly recommend embracing the ukulele—a small instrument with a big heart.

Thank you for joining me on this musical adventure. Your support and shared passion make every voyage even more special. Until next time, keep exploring, dreaming, and strumming along.
